Ideas for the Reuse or Repurposing of Wine Bottles

Drinking the wine wasn't the only fun part.  Now use the bottles to create fun projects!

While recycling your bottles is an option, it is even more fun to reuse or repurpose them into something beautiful or useful.  The following are just a few of hundreds of possibilities that take just a bit of craftiness to transform those bottles into something awesome.

Wine Bottle Light

There are two ways to reasonably make a wine bottle light.  For both methods, you will have to glue the glass beads, that you can find at any garden, craft or even Dollar Store, on to the bottle. Glue gun and hot glue is our suggestion. The difference in the two methods is whether or not you want to take on the task of drilling glass.

  1. In the picture, this version has had a hole drilled at the bottom to allow for Christmas lights to be strung through and plugged in to an outlet. There are many ways to cut glass, some more dangerous than others.  We will save that for another post, but you can find many references for that on Google or YouTube.  If cutting glass doesn't sound safe or desirable, you can do option two.
  2. Alternatively, you can put the string of lights through the top of the bottle, but the wire will come out of the top.  There are ways to disguise this a bit by securing the wire down the back.  You could create a guide with the glass beads, but the wire will still be visible coming out of the top.  Our suggestion is to cut a bit of the cork to allow for the width of the cord and then stick the cork in the top of the bottle to disguise the wire.
  3. You could use battery operated lights, but replacing batteries can be spendy and they are usually not very powerful.  You would need several for a bottle and the battery box would be an issue, most likely having to sit outside next to the bottle. Add several of those boxes and that's not too pretty.  We don't think it's an option, but let us know if you have had any success with battery operated lights in the comments section.

This is one great way to create beautiful ambiance at night  for entertaining or just for your own personal enjoyment.  Imagine several of these lining the top of kitchen cabinets or outside in a garden. An afternoon project that will be enjoyed for years to come.

#1 - Glue and colored string are all you will need for this project. Completely cover the string in glue and then wrap around the bottle.  Simple.

#2 - Spray paint and string are all that is required for this project.  Wrap string in interesting designs around your bottle and then spray paint.  You could also use painter's tape to create interesting patterns, as well.

#3 - Glitter and glue!  Sponge glue on to the bottle and pour on the glitter!  You could create patterns with painter's tape, as well.

#4 - Some glass beads, silk leaves, raffia and a glass charm turn these bottles in to something beautiful.  Add lights to this for an even more dramatic presentation.

#5 - You can glue anything to the bottles to make it beautiful.  Seen here, fabric plus decorative string beading make this perfect for wedding vases.

Water and flowers are all you have to have to turn your wine bottle in to a vase.  Shown above, a little decorative ribbon was added.  Any of the bottles shown on the decorative bottles section could also be used as a vase.

Hummingbird Feeder Stopper

This is a great way to keep your plants watered while on a trip.  After filling the bottle with water, you will need to place the bottle at a 30 degree angle in your pot, sticking the head of the bottle in to the soil. Create a hole for the bottle first, so that you don't clog the neck with soil.  We also recommend that you first water your plant thoroughly and then stick the water bottle in.  Otherwise, the water from the bottle will go quickly to water the surrounding dry soil.

Wine Bottle Hummingbird Feeders

Seed Bird Feeder

There are many ways to turn a wine bottle in to a bird feeder.  Here, we show two.  Featured above, is a Hummingbird Feeder.  You will need to track down one of these humming bird feeder stoppers, pictured to the left.  You can find them on Amazon or at your local garden store.  There are a lot of different ways to hang the bottle, but shown here, it has been wrapped in copper tubing and attached to a garden stake.  Copper tubing can be found at your local home improvement store and can be shaped in to decorative patterns for more interest.

Wine Bottle Seed Feeders

There are several ways to turn a wine bottle in to a bird seed feeder.  The one shown above, would require the cutting of the bottom of the bottle off and some light sanding.  Again, that would require a bit of care for safety.  Alternatively, you can take the approach shown below.  You can attach a wine bottle to anything, or build something specifically for the bottle, like was done here.  We would recommend that a second tie or strap be attached to ensure that the bottle does not slide down and therefore trap the seed from coming out.  You will need to have space between the end of the bottle and the floor, so that seed can flow freely from the opening.
